Sonali Phogat Death:Police Say,Goa Club Owner, Drug Dealer Arrested
Panaji/New Delhi: Following the murder of actor and BJP
politician Sonali Phogat, the Goa Police have opened a narcotics probe
and detained two more persons. This is in addition to the police
filing of a murder case and the arrest of two of her colleagues.
The most recent arrests include Edwin Nunes, proprietor of the
restaurant Curlie's, where Phogat was seen partying the night before
her murder, and Dattaprasad Gaonkar, a narcotics dealer. Both have
been identified as defendants in the narcotics case.
Sudhir Sangwan and Sukhwinder Singh, colleagues of the Haryana BJP
leader detained on Thursday, were sentenced to 10 days in police
prison today. Sangwan and Singh "admitted" to police that they
obtained narcotics from Gaonkar.
So far, the police have questioned over 25 persons, including employees at the restaurant, the resort where Phogat was staying, the hospital where she was confirmed dead, and her driver. The police stated Tuesday that Phogat was at the famed restaurant-nightclub on Anjuna beach on Monday when she was forced to consume "some drug" mixed with water by Sangwan and Singh, citing security camera video and purported admissions. She "felt uneasy" after drinking it and could scarcely move on her own, so her companions drove her to the hotel, Grand Leonny, where they were staying. The BJP leader was carried to St Anthony's Hospital the next morning, when she was pronounced dead. "The Investigating Officer studied CCTV footage of relevant businesses and discovered that Sudhir was forcing Sonali to consume the suspected substance in a water bottle," the police said in a statement.
Security Camera Footage
Security camera footage released yesterday shows the former Bigg Boss
contestant exiting the eatery with Sangwan while unable to walk.
Phogat's death was first ruled a heart attack, but Goa police later
charged her with murder after her family sought a thorough investigation
and assistance from Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar. Her
family has also accused her of rape, although the police have not yet
filed charges.

Sangwan and Singh were arrested on Thursday
According to authorities, Sangwan and Singh were detained on Thursday evening so that they could not destroy the evidence. A Goa court today sentenced them to ten days in police prison. Phogat's post-mortem report was released on Thursday, revealing "many blunt force injuries across the body" and the necessity for authorities to investigate the reason of her death. The police indicated Tuesday that the cause of her death could only be determined following a viscera examination.
